Briarwood Christian School, Chelsea and Calera each fell in the sub-regional round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association playoffs Feb. 11.

Selma 54, Briarwood Christian 22

NORTH SHELBY — The Briarwood Christian School girls’ basketball team faced difficult odds in a Class 5A sub-regional contest Feb. 11 against Selma in the Alabama High School Athletic Association playoffs.

With his leading rebounder not able to play in the game, Briarwood coach Jim Brown was concerned about his players would match up against a taller Selma lineup.

Brown’s worst fears were realized as Selma started the game with a 17-0 run and never looked back.

Selma was too much for the Lions, who were missing forward Anna Handlin. Handlin sat out the game after suffering a mild concussion in Briarwood’s 38-31 win over Chelsea in the Class 5A, Area 8 tournament championship game Feb. 6.

“(Selma) jumped on us in the first quarter and just coasted after that,” Brown said. “They’ve got really big players. We were playing a little shorthanded against a very good team. That’s a bad combination.”

Point guard Cara Medders led the Lions (18-12) with seven points.

Despite the season-ending loss to Selma, Brown was proud of what the Lions were able to accomplish during the 2009-2010 season. Brown gave credit to seniors Laura Gilbert, Julia Hoke and Kathryn Byers for helping Briarwood finish undefeated in area play for the second year in a row.

“I thought it was a great accomplishment,” Brown said. “We found our stride in January. We had good leadership from our seniors and we’re really going to miss them.”

Carver-Montgomery 70, Chelsea 37

The Hornets (14-17) saw their season end with the loss on the road Carver’s final home basketball game in E.L. Wood Gymnasium in a Class 5A sub-regional contest in the Alabama High School Athletic Association playoffs.

Lauren Swee and Sydney Arnold led Chelsea with seven points each.

Ramsay 80, Calera 17

The Eagles struggled from the outset, as they fell behind 32-4 after the first quarter in the Class 4A sub-regional contest in the Alabama High School Athletic Association playoffs.

Ramsay continued to have the upper hand throughout the second and third quarters before closing the game with a 15-1 run in the fourth quarter

A’Kia Harris led the Eagles (4-19) with six points.
