A second-half comeback attempt by the Kingwood Christian School girls’ basketball team came up short in a 47-39 overtime loss Feb. 16 to Glenwood School in the Alabama Independent Schools Association Class 3A Elite Eight in Montgomery.

Kingwood erased a nine-point halftime deficit and was able to push the game into overtime, but the Lions fell short of the Class 3A Final Four after suffering the loss at Roland Arena on the Huntingdon College campus.

Katherine Stockman led the Lions (16-7) with 15 points on 7-of-10 field goals. Whitney Gillespie added 12 points.

Kingwood’s leading scorer, senior Lauren Rozof, and Casey Whitmer added six points each. However, Rozof hit only 3-of-16 field goals and finished 0-of-5 from 3-point range. Whitmer hit only 3-of-9 field goals.

Glenwood jumped out to an early 14-4 lead in the first quarter and led 18-9 at the end of the quarter.

Both teams struggled in the second quarter and finished with only one field goal each in the period, as Glenwood carried a 20-11 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Lions opened the second half with a 7-1 run to cut Glenwood’s lead to 21-18. Gillespie capped the run with a 3-pointer with 5:25 remaining in the third quarter.

Glenwood responded with a run of its own to push the lead to 28-20 entering the fourth quarter.

The Lions rallied early in the fourth quarter and tied the game twice after back-to-back field goals by Stockman midway through the quarter. Gillespie gave Kingwood its first lead of the game on a layup with 2:37 left.

Following a Glenwood field goal, Stockman added a layup to put the Lions back on top, 37-35, with 1:58 remaining.

Glenwood tied the game on a layup with 21 seconds remaining following an offensive rebound and Rozof missed a 3-pointer with five seconds left, which sent the game into overtime.

Glenwood scored first in the overtime session just 24 seconds into the extra four-minute period. Glenwood added a free throw with 1:52 left and another field goal with 1:13 remaining to push the lead to 42-37.

Glenwood hit 6-of-8 free throws in the final minute of overtime to seal the win.

Despite the loss to Glenwood in the Elite Eight, Kingwood will display a piece of hardware from the 2009-2010 season. The Lions won the AISA Class 3A, Region 2 tournament Feb. 6 at Alabama Southern Community College in Monroeville.
