Chelsea will be hosting its 11th annual Arbor Day Celebration Feb. 27 at the Chelsea Recreational Park Highway 39. Chelsea has been recognized as a Tree City USA for educating the public about the importance of trees with events such as the Arbor Day celebration, said tree commission member Mavis Efferson.

“We’ll be giving out fliers, seedlings, and prizes like big trees, tools, and gift cards for the children and adults who come,” said Efferson. The types of seedlings given out will be the same as last year because they were so well-received, and include dogwood, redbud, nuttall oak, overcup oak and red maple, she said.

The Arbor Day celebration will be a chance to learn more about trees, their planting and care. “It’s important to get the information out to people about how important trees are for the air and shade in the summer. It’s our job to go ahead and help teach those things,” said Efferson.

The event is free and will last from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Recreational Park is half a mile west of Chelsea Middle School.
