Columbiana’s city council unanimously passed a resolution to name Field A at the Columbiana Sports Complex in honor of David Cofer in their Feb. 16 meeting. The Columbiana Park and Recreation Board recommended that the field be named “David Cofer Field” because of his service to sports in Columbiana.

Cofer’s involvement with Columbiana sports included coaching baseball at Shelby County High School and the City Youth Baseball League, assisting with football statistics for Shelby County High School and being an assistant coach for Columbiana Middle School.

Councilman Stancil Handley reminded the council and the public in attendance about the Cowboy Parade on Feb. 20. He said the venders and demonstrators will begin to set up in the Summer Classics property around 10 a.m. and will be ready by 11 a.m. The parade, which will have a longer route than last year’s, will start at 1 p.m. and the shootout will begin at 3 p.m.

“The enthusiasm for people coming into Columbiana for the parade is overwhelming,” said Handley. “The cattlemen are excited, they’re coming in full force.”
