An Alabaster group looking to construct a new stadium for the city’s schools and sports leagues is looking to move one step closer toward its goal.

The Alabaster Sports and Entertainment Foundation will hold its first Warrior Jam at the Thompson High School football stadium off Thompson Road March 27 from 5-10 p.m.

The event will feature inflatables, punt and kick contests, face painting, food and performances by the M80s, The Nick Williams Band, Paula Marie and Lil’ Vegas, Alabaster Pipes and Drums, Sanchez and the Thompson High School dance team and cheerleaders.

Tickets to the event will be $10, and proceeds generated during the event will be used to help construct a new high school stadium and track, said foundation President Ched Burton.

Anyone who purchases four tickets will receive a fifth free, Burton said.

“Anything we can do to put 4,000 or 5,000 people in the stadium is great,” Burton said. “Hopefully, we can raise a good bit of money during this event to put us closer to our goal.”

Burton and other Alabaster residents founded ASEF in November 2009 to raise enough money to construct new bleachers, install an artificial turf field, install a new track and complete several other projects at the decades-old stadium.

Depending on the amount of development done at the stadium, the project could cost between $1.5 million and $3 million, Burton said previously.

The new track is part of the first phase of the project, and could be constructed by fall 2010 if the foundation receives enough donations, Burton wrote in a press release.

“A $10 or $20 per-month donation provides a facility that reduces the injuries of our track team, (grants the) ability to have home events and (gives them) the resources to improve their skills for future achievements,” read the release.

Although Burton said fundraising for the project is “a little slower” than he predicted, he said the foundation would continue to seek donations until the project is completed.

“We will get it done; it’s just a matter of time right now,” Burton said.
