A Calera volunteer is looking for local farmers and citizens to help organize the city’s first farmers’ market, which could begin as early as this summer.

Rebecca Krueger, who is working to organize the farmers’ market, is seeking volunteers to serve on the market’s board of directors, she announced during a March 1 Calera City Council meeting.

The board likely will consist of Krueger, a city representative and three other volunteers, and would work to organize, promote and regulate the market.

Calera leaders approved the city farmers’ market in January, but Krueger suggested the city change the market’s time and location.

Though Krueger originally planned to hold the market on Saturday mornings in the Calera City Hall parking lot, the Alabama Farmers’ Market Authority urged her to hold the market on Tuesday afternoons from about 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“I think the market is a great idea,” said Calera Mayor Jon Graham. “But we need to pick the time when the most people are coming and going.”

Krueger also said she would like to hold the market at Oliver Park.

“There would already be people there for ballgames and the library, and there’s better and more parking if the market ever grew into something larger,” Krueger said. “The Farmers’ Market Authority’s reasoning behind having the market on Tuesday is that the growers around here are already committed to several markets on Saturdays.

“They (Farmers’ Market Authority) will also help us promote our market,” Krueger added. “We could do it on our own, but the market’s chances for survival would not be as good.”

Once organized, Calera’s markets could begin in the next few months. However, Krueger and city officials said they plan to ensure the market would be covered by the city’s current liability insurance before finalizing the market’s starting date.

“If we have to get extra insurance, it’s probably not going to happen this year,” Krueger said.

In other business, the council:

Announced the city will dedicate the city’s No. 1 Fire Station in memory of former Fire Chief Tommy Moon during a ceremony Feb. 12 at 4 p.m.

Agreed to allow Calera Library Director Janet Greathouse hire one part-time employee. The hire will allow Greathouse to open the library on Mondays, she said.

Agreed to allow Public Works Director David Jones and Director of Sewer and Wastewater Operations Doug Smedley to each hire two part-time summer employees.

Appointed Danny Crowson as the city’s municipal judge, and re-appointed Casey Duncan as the city’s prosecutor.
