Spain Park pounds Thompson in area baseball opener

Spain Park High School took care of business early in an 11-0 win over Thompson in five innings in the Class 6A, Area 10 opener at Peanut Davenport Field for both teams March 4.

The Jags (9-4, 1-0 in Class 6A, Area 10) scored a single run in the first inning, four runs in the second inning and five runs in the third inning to put the game out of reach.

Jake Lee and Mikey White each finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs each for the Jaguars. Lee, who batted in the leadoff spot, also scored three runs. White had a triple and two singles.

Chris Ellis had a double. Carter White, Aaron Haag, Graham Craig, Colton Freeman and Charlie McPherson each had singles as Spain Park racked up 10 hits in the win.

Haag finished with two RBIs and McPherson drove in one run. Craig and McPherson scored two runs each. Haag, Freeman, Jacob Hoadley and Marks Abernathy scored one run each.

Ellis (3-0) fired a one-hitter with seven strikeouts without a walk in a dominating performance on the mound.

Matt Haskins finished 1-for-2 and accounted for the only hit for the Warriors (8-3, 0-1) with a triple. Thompson struggled in the field with four errors.

Thompson starting pitcher Jonathan Keller struggled for the first time this season as he gave up nine runs, including seven earned runs, on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Aaron McRee gave up two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 2 1/3 innings in relief. Zach Hawkins recorded the final two outs.

Thompson was originally scheduled to host Spain Park on March 2, but the game was delayed for two days due to weather conditions. The two teams conclude the regular season series March 5 at Spain Park High School. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
