An interview team representing Hoover City Schools will review applications for the Spain Park High School principal position over spring break, according to Mary Veal, the school system’s director of human resources.

The system stopped taking applications for the position March 5.

Veal said in an e-mail the interview team is made up of two members of the Spain Park faculty, two parents from the Spain Park community, another principal and central office personnel.

To help guide the interview team, Hoover City Schools Chief Academic Officer Ken Jarnigan worked with Spain Park faculty to develop a list of professional and personal characteristics to look for in the next principal, Veal said.

“These characteristics will help guide the interview team as they review applications and develop interview questions that address these traits,” she said.

Over spring break, which is the week of March 15-19, the team will review the 45 applications the system received for the position. There was one more application, but the applicant withdrew his name from consideration.

The next week, the team will meet again to select final candidates.

Three of the applicants are from within the Hoover School System.

Hoover City Schools spokesperson Jason Gaston said the three internal candidates are Jennifer Hogan, currently a coach and teacher at Hoover High School; Amanda Hood, currently an assistant principal at Spain Park High School; and Ron Dodson, currently the director of secondary curriculum for the school system.

Veal said the final interviews would take place at the end of March and beginning of April.

The team hopes to have a recommendation ready by the April 12 Hoover Board of Education meeting.

Current Spain Park Principal Billy Broadway, whose retirement will be effective June 30, is not part of the search process, Veal said.
