Farm Day celebration set for March 26, 27

“I’m OK. I know where I’m going.”

That’s the motto of the Montevallo High School FFA Farm Day 2010 scheduled for March 26-27. It’s indeed a fitting motto, as those were some of the final words of Keith Adair, the beloved FFA advisor who died recently and in whose honor Farm Day is dedicated.

On Friday, March 26, Farm Day will be open only to elementary students and will be dedicated to educating them on agriculture. Among the many activities will be bio-diesel demonstrations using recycled oil, farrier demonstrations, a petting zoo with donkeys, rabbits, pigs, cows, sheep and goats and a visit from McGruff the Crime Dog.

Plans for Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., are for an agricultural festival with a pedal-tractor pull for kids, arts and crafts demonstration, informational booths, a moon bounce and entertainment all day with different bands.

The theme for the event is “Farming Out Loud,” and that is the title of a 30-minute production by the students to be shown several times during the day.

Visitors will also enjoy a tractor parade, a silent auction, the petting zoo and a kids’ fun area.

Admission to Farm Day is free, but there will be available arm bands ($3) and T-shirts ($7) sporting the “I’m OK, I know where I’m going” motto, the “Farming Out Loud” slogan and delightful artwork by a contest-winning Montevallo Elementary School student.

“Farm Day is designed and facilitated by the students,” said Kevin Peters, who is the acting advisor to the FFA, “to show their appreciation and to give back to the community for the support the community has given FFA.”

The FFA alumni are sponsoring the silent auction to benefit scholarships for graduating FFA students. The alumni association was organized in 2006 as part of the local chapter. Their mission is to support the promise of FFA to change lives and to prepare students for premier leadership, personal growth and career success.
