Pelham High School junior pitcher Trevor Fitts took the mound against Shelby County in the Joe Campbell baseball tournament March 16 at Homewood High School on one of the hottest streaks in high school baseball.

Fitts entered the game with a perfect 5-0 record and a microscopic earned run average. Fitts improved both of those numbers in a 10-0 win over the Wildcats, which sealed the tournament championship for the Panthers.

Fitts (6-0) fired a one-hitter with double-digit strikeouts in his second consecutive start. The Mississippi State commitment baffled Shelby County hitters for five innings and struck out 12, with Braten Dill’s double against the center field wall in the top of the fourth inning as his only blemish.

“When (Trevor) throws the ball like that, we feel very good,” said Pelham coach Jeff Mauldin. “Our kids play with a different swagger when he’s on the mound. He has an extra energy level.”

Fitts got plenty of help from the Panthers (21-2) at the plate. Andrew Bishop blasted a solo homer over the left field wall in Pelham’s second at-bat and the Panthers never looked back.

Trae Santos went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run. Parker Curry went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Michael Herring had an RBI double and Michael Bishop had an RBI single. Cameron Haynes ended the game with his RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Panthers a 10-run lead.

Dill recorded the only hit of the game for the Wildcats, who fell to 13-4 overall.

Tyler Simms took the loss for Shelby County after giving up three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Dylan Gambrell gave up five runs on six hits in three innings in relief.

The Wildcats used three pitchers in the game. Shelby County coach Shane Beasley said his team’s pitching depth was tested as the Wildcats faced four Class 6A teams in a two-day span.

“We ran out of pitching,” Beasley said. “A couple of guys had a sore arm and we’re not going to hurt them right now.”

Pelham 11, Homewood 4

Andrew Bishop had three hits and drove in six runs to help the Panthers finish 4-0 at the Joe Campbell tournament.

Ty Pierce added a double and a single and drove in three runs. Hunter Soleymani picked up the win on the mound.

Northridge 7, Shelby County 6

Bailey Benton led the Wildcats with two hits. Chad King, Kevin McNorton, Austin Shelton and Keaton Wood had one hit each.

Benton, Simms and Shelton recorded an RBI each. Benton, King, McNorton, Sellers, Pate and Wood each scored a run.
