Dear Editor,

On Friday, December 4, 2009 Philip Davis became the first Pelham police officer to be killed in the line of duty. Philip was a wonderful and loving friend, son, husband, father and colleague. For those who never met him, Phillip was the consummate law enforcement professional who loved his family, community and profession. His life was a testament to compassion, ethics and hard work that continues to serve as an inspiration to us all. We will never forget the sacrifice that he and his family made for this community.

The community support for officer Davis’ family and our extended family at the Pelham Police Department has been truly amazing. As we returned to Pelham following the funeral services, a procession of police and public safety vehicles lined the streets. The procession route was lined with men, women and children who held signs, waved flags and applauded our officers and employees as we passed indicating their support. Local businesses provided food for the family and employees of the police department during this sorrowful time. The community, police department and the City of Pelham as a whole bound together and made a commitment to pay off the debt owed on the Davis family mortgage. I can proudly say with your steadfast support the mortgage has been paid in full. For everything you have done and everything you continue to do I humbly thank you.

Our citizens have reminded us why we are willing to do this very difficult, demanding and dangerous job. You have brought things back into perspective for us, demonstrating that the vast majority of our citizens respect and appreciate our efforts to keep our community safe. I speak for every employee of the Pelham Police Department in saying thank you for being there for us. We are honored to serve this great community.

I must also thank our brothers and sisters in public safety. You fought by our side as we searched for and apprehended the suspect charged with Philip’s murder. You demonstrated professionalism and restraint. You have been there for us in our time of need, as we are always there for each other.

Lastly, I must thank and commend the officers and employees of the Pelham Police Department. Once again, you have demonstrated that you are an amazing group of people.

You have supported Philip’s family, me and each other during a very difficult time, without any disruption in service to our community. You are a class act and I am proud and honored to serve our glorious community at your side.
