Edith Farmer has seen many residents come and go through the Pelham Senior Center, and she’s even seen several senior centers come and go.

From the old days at the Armory to the in-between days at the Civic Complex to the current days at the facility off Racquet Club Parkway, Farmer’s been a part of the Senior Center for all the memories.

Not only did Farmer cut the ribbon on the current center several years ago, but she also holds the distinction as the eldest member as she turned 100 March 25.

Dozens of members turned out for Farmer’s birthday, including family, friends and Mayor Don Murphy.

“You’re the best looking 100-year-old I have ever seen,” Murphy said of Farmer.

“I’m the only one you know,” Farmer said jokingly in response.

And it’s that quick wit and charm friends say makes Farmer so special.

“Her mind is just like it was 50 to 60 years ago,” said friend Earldon Arwood.

While Farmer was happy to see all of her friends at the celebration, she said she wouldn’t get too carried away.

“You try not to get too excited when you get my age,” Farmer said with a smile.

Barbara Roberts, Senior Center director, said Farmer has been a vital part of the senior community for many years, and her dedication to the center and its members is something everyone should emulate.

Even when Farmer stopped driving several years ago, Roberts said she had her daughter, Faye, start bringing her to the center at least once a week.

“She’s sharp as a tack, she has a wonderful attitude and she’s an example to all of us on how to live a good life,” said Roberts. “That’s Edith.”
