One of Alabaster’s most popular summer events is returning, as Movies in the Park will begin May 28.

The free program will feature a movie every other Friday at Veterans Park through Aug. 6.

“With the economy like it is, it’s just a great couple of hours that the family can spend together,” Alabaster Parks and Recreation Director Ricky Nance said. “It’s a great, great program.”

As always, the Parks and Rec. Department has something for everyone this year, with a mix of three animated movies and three non-animated movies. All movies are rated PG, with the exception of the last movie, which is rated PG-13.

“We try to have family-friendly movies,” Nance said. “That’s our utmost goal.”

The program will begin with “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” May 28, followed by “E.T.” June 11, “Monsters and Aliens” June 25, “Imagine That” July 9 and “Planet 51” July 23.

To get moviegoers in the football spirit, the parks department will show “The Blind Side” Aug. 6 as the final movie.

Visitors are asked to bring blankets, chairs, snacks and drinks, but alcohol and pets are not allowed.

Movies begin at 8 p.m.

The parks department is also planning its Music in the Park series that will alternate on Fridays when the movies are not playing.

However, that schedule has not yet been set.
