Pelham edges Oak Mountain for Shelby County tennis title

The Pelham High School boys’ tennis team edged Oak Mountain for the 2010 Shelby County boys’ tennis tournament championship April 9 at the Pelham Tennis Center.

The Panthers captured two singles’ championship and two doubles’ championship on their way to the title.

Pelham finished with 43 points, followed by Oak Mountain’s 39 points. Briarwood Christian came in third with 35 points.

Pelham’s Jim Flaniken captured the No. 1 singles’ title with a 6-1, 7-6 win over the Eagles’ Hector Garza. Jacob Dolinger of Pelham won the No. 5 singles’ title with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 win over Phillip Taylor of Briarwood.

Flaniken and Andy Bridgewater teamed up to win the No. 1 doubles’ championship with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Thomas Mason and Jonathan Wilson of Oak Mountain. Trevor Tucker and Payton Davis of Pelham defeated Mark Newton and Preston Touliatos 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 2 doubles’ championship match.

Oak Mountain won two singles’ championships and a doubles’ titles.

Touliatos won the No. 2 singles’ championship with a 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 win over Pelham’s Bridgewater. Newton won the No. 7 singles’ title with a 2-6, 7-6, 11-9 win over Brent Durrett of Briarwood.

Jake Marinelli and Garza defeated Briarwood’s Russell Hancock and Devin Bowman 6-2, 7-6 in the No. 3 doubles’ championship.

Briarwood captured three singles’ titles.

Taylor Brewton won the No. 3 singles’ championship with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Oak Mountain’s Mason in the final. Hancock captured the No. 4 singles’ title with a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 win over the Eagles’ Hunter Dodson in the final.

Bowman won the No. 6 singles’ championship with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Taylor Honeycutt of Pelham.

Jake Doggett of Westminster School at Oak Mountain won the No. 8 singles’ championship with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Briarwood’s Andrew May in the final.

Westminster finished fourth overall with seven points, Indian Springs came in fifth with five points and Chelsea finished sixth with four points. Thompson didn’t win any matches.
