State offering rebates on green appliances

Shelby County residents looking to update their home appliances will have a chance to bring in up to $150 in rebates through a state energy efficient appliance program.

Alabama will begin offering the Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program April 19, and the program will last until May 9, or until funds are exhausted.

Through the program, the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs will be offering rebates on energy efficient room air conditioners, freezers, dishwashers, clothes washers and refrigerators.

The department will offer a $25 rebate on room air conditioners, $50 on freezers, $75 on dishwashers, $100 on clothes washers and $150 on standard-sized refrigerators.

The rebates only apply to appliances with new Energy Star labels, and the program is being funded by federal stimulus money.

“True to the spirit of the act, the program is designed to give an economic boost to Alabama retailers,” Doni Ingram, director of the Department of Economic and Community Affairs, wrote in a press release.

“Many of us cut back on spending as the nation’s economy slumped, resulting in less business for our merchants,” Ingram added, noting Internet appliance sales will not qualify for rebates. “To encourage residents to buy locally, rebates will be given only for purchases made in Alabama stores.”
