Montevallo junior wins PBC women’s golf tournament

Junior Emily Gibson of the University of Montevallo women’s golf team lived up to her Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year billing as she used a come-from-behind performance to capture the first ever Peach Belt Conference women’s golf tournament title April 13.

Gibson, a Toronto, Ontario native, trailed three golfers heading into the final round on Tuesday, but shot a tournament-best 74 to capture the championship by two strokes. The Falcons as a team finished in third place just three strokes out of second position.

The Falcons finished behind Flagler and Armstrong Atlantic but finished ahead of UNC Pembroke, Columbus State and North Georgia.

Sophomore Emma Breen finished ninth overall with a two round score of 164. Senior Rachel Shaner came in tied for 11th with a score of 169. The final two UM golfers were freshman Kayla Witt, who finished tied for 17th, and senior Angela Buonassisi, who finished in 25th.

The Montevallo golfers will now await the announcement for the NCAA Region Tournament to be played on May 2-4.

The University of Montevallo men’s golf team closed out the 2009-2010 season with a sixth-place finish at the Peach Belt Conference tournament. Montevallo finished ahead of Lander, Clayton State, Flagler, Georgia Southwestern and North Georgia.

The Falcons were led by senior Tripp Cash, who finished tied for eighth overall with a three-round score of 224.
