The Alabaster City Council unanimously approved two resolutions Thursday, April 15 that will help address water issues in the city.

The council approved a resolution to renew an Alabama Department of Environmental Management/Environmental Protection Agency permit application for the wastewater treatment plant, while also approving a resolution to enter into a contractual agreement with Cambridge Water Technology for operation of a CoMag pilot plant for the wastewater treatment plant.

Council member Tommy Ryals said the permit application cost with ADEM/EPA has increased from $500 to $10,575, so the council must amend the budget to cover the cost.

Ryals said the contract with Cambridge for the CoMag pilot plant will cost the city $4,000, but the chemical treatments delivered by the company could save the city from having to build another wastewater treatment plant at nearly double the cost of the existing one.

“It could save us millions of dollars,” Ryals said of the pilot plant. “We’re hoping this will bail us out.”

In other actions, the council:

— Approved a resolution to participate in the state sales tax holiday Aug. 6-8.

— Approved a resolution allowing the Fire Department to apply for a $53,000 mobile data terminals grant.

— Approved a liquor license for El Potro Restaurant located at 251 Buck Creek Plaza.
