An Indiana man who abandoned his airplane mid-flight and parachuted out over Shelby County will appear in court facing securities fraud charges Oct. 4.

Marcus Schrenker, a former Indiana financial advisor who is currently serving a federal prison term for intentionally crashing his plane in Florida after he parachuted out into Harpersville in 2009, will face the fraud charges in the Hamilton (Ind.) Superior Court.

Indiana prosecutors levied the fraud charges against Schrenker after an investigation by the Indiana Secretary of State’s office.

Prosecutors said Schrenker stole more than $1.5 million from investors before he carefully planned to flee Indiana and fake his death by crashing his plane in Florida.

Before crashing his plane, Schrenker drove from Indiana to Harpersville to store a motorcycle and supplies in the U.S. 280 East Mini Warehouse before returning to Indiana to fly his private plane to Destin, Fla.

When his plane was over Alabama on Jan. 11, 2009, Schrenker made a distress call to Georgia air traffic controllers before he parachuted out over Harpersville. After he jumped out, Schrenker’s plane crashed near Milton, Fla.

Authorities later found and arrested Schrenker at a campsite near Tallahassee after the suspect had slit his wrists.
