Shelby County sweeps Sylacauga in baseball playoffs

The Shelby County High School baseball team swept Sylacauga on the road in the opening round Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A playoffs April 16.

The Wildcats defeated Sylacauga 7-2 in the opener and closed out the series with an 8-3 win in the nightcap.

Shelby County will travel to Briarwood Christian School in the second round of the playoffs April 23-24.

Braten Dill picked up the win in the first game after giving up two earned runs on six hits with 12 strikeouts and three walks.

Garrett Sellers led Shelby County (20-7) at the plate as he finished 4-for-4.

Keaton Wood finished with a three-run homer, a single and drove in four runs. Joe Pate went 3-for-3 and drove in a run.

Bailey Benton and Dill had a single each.

Evan McNeal recorded the win in the second game as he gave up three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in five innings.

Chad King didn’t allow a run on one hit with two strikeouts and a walk in two innings in relief.

King led the Wildcats at the plate as he finished with a homer, a single and drove in two runs.

McNeal also homered, had a single and drove in one run. Dill went 3-for-4 at the plate with three singles.

Kevin McNorton had a double.
