University of Montevallo baseball coach John Jarnagin has resigned from his post at the school but will remain with the team through the remainder of the 2010 season, said Sean Forrester, Montevallo sports information director.

Jarnagin told his players about his resignation April 16.

The Falcons have struggled this season, compiling a 12-35 record with a season-ending three-game series against Carson-Newman at Kermit A. Johnson Field remaining on the schedule. Montevallo ended its first season in the Peach Belt Conference with a 5-19 record in conference play.

Jarnagin became the sixth head coach in school history when he came to Montevallo in 2008, the 50th anniversary season for the Falcons’ baseball program, and has led the school to a 70-91-2 record during his three seasons at the helm.

The San Diego, Calif., native, compiled a 263-386-2 record in 12 seasons at Division I Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky., before coming to Montevallo.

The Falcons, who played in the NCAA Division II College World Series in 2006, have failed to reach the postseason during Jarnagan’s tenure.

Montevallo will close out the 2010 season May 1-2 with a three-game series against Carson-Newman.
