Oak Mountain High School boys’ soccer coach Ryan Patridge wanted a win in the Eagles’ final Class 6A, Section 5 match April 20 against Hoover.

The Eagles couldn’t get a few second-half blasts into the net in a 1-0 loss to the Bucs, but the outcome wasn’t terribly disappointing.

Oak Mountain (14-4) still clinched a share of the Section 5 championship and will host a first-round playoff match as the top seed in the section.

The Eagles earned the top seed due to a tiebreaker rule. A loss by more than two goals to Hoover in the Eagles’ final Section 5 game would have allowed the Bucs to clinch the top seed.

Patridge is glad his team will play at home in the first round of the playoffs.

“It’s huge because we’ve got a boisterous crowd,” Patridge said. “It’s just nice to play at home.”

The Eagles couldn’t get a few shots by seniors D.J. Jackson and William Glass into the net in the second half against the Bucs. Oak Mountain goalkeeper Brenton Thompson had a solid game despite allowing a second-half goal to the Bucs.

Patridge was pleased with the Eagles’ play in their final Class 6A, Section 5 game.

“The positives are there,” Patridge said. “We put ourselves in position to score goals.”
