Cornerstone Christian School boys’ track and field coach Jermaine Livingston was worried on the opening day of the Alabama Independent Schools Association Class 1A state championship meet April 21 at Ralph Jordan Memorial Stadium in Selma.

A dropped exchange of the baton on the 800-meter relay eliminated the Chargers from an event in which they expected to finish near the top.

The Chargers relieved his worries on day two as they came out in strong form April 22 to win the school’s first ever AISA Class 1A track and field championship.

“We give thanks and glory to God,” Livingston said. “It’s a big milestone for Cornerstone Christian to win the school’s first ever track and field state championship.”

Cornerstone finished first in three different events.

J.V. McKinney won in the high jump competition with a jump of 6 feet. LaDarius King finished first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.10 seconds.

The 400-meter relay team, which consisted of Josh Anderson, J.V. McKinney, LaDarius King, and Kadarius King, also won first place.

Colton Wingard placed fourth in the discus. Michael Martin, a member of the track team since middle school, finished fifth in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. Dillon Watts finished sixth in the 800-meter run.

“All of our athletes performed on a high level,” Livingston added. “I’m proud of the effort each one gave for both our team and school.”
