The city of Alabaster has begun moving ground on a community garden near the site of the new Senior Center.

Mayor David Frings said that city employees would prep the garden, and then the citizens would tend to and maintain the garden.

“If you want to help plant … then you can pick the vegetables,” Frings said.

Alabaster Parks and Recreation Director Ricky Nance said the garden would be approximately 40×40 square feet.

Nance said the seniors at the center already have several vegetables planted in pots and buckets with their names on them, and they’re excited about having a permanent garden.

“This is just an extension of that,” Nance said.

Both Nance and Frings said the garden would operate on the honor system.

There will be a posted sign with a number for anyone interested in participating in the garden.

“If you work in the garden, you can partake of the vegetables,” Nance said.

If all goes well, Frings said he would like to build an additional community garden near Abby Wooley Park in the Simmsville area.

“This is just a trial run to see how it goes,” Nance said.
