County accepting of all who live here

Dear Editor,

When my daughter was born with Down Syndrome more than 18 years ago I did not know how my community would accept my child, but I need not have worried.

The people of Alabaster have accepted my daughter and others like her since her birth.

I was first exposed to the Special Olympics organization when my child participated in the county track and field meet just like the one recently held at Thompson High School. For the past 10 years she has been involved in Special Olympics, even going to the national games in Iowa in 2006. I am always amazed at the way Alabaster supports this organization and any other groups that aim to help children and adults with mental and physical disabilities.

Hats off to the residents of Shelby County, Alabaster and surrounding cities who continue to support Special Olympics.

We should also be proud of our students and youth who have taken on the challenge of accepting and working with those who are different than they are. I am proud to be a resident of this city.
