Panthers win area softball tournament opener against Thompson

The Pelham High School softball team topped rival Thompson 8-5 in the Panthers’ opening game of the Class 6A, Area 10 tournament April 29.

Erin Whitman led the Panthers (24-13) at the plate as she finished 2-for-4, including a three-run homer, and scored a run.

Mary Morgan Dramer went 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Emily Sharman finished 2-for-3, drove in a run and scored a run.

Becky Fox picked up the win in the circle after giving up three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and a walk in five innings.

Kim Wilson led Thompson (20-25) at the plate as she finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Ashley Savage went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in three runs. Kelsey Johnson finished 2-for-4 and scored a run. Laurel Riley went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Warriors won their first game of the Area 10 tournament 3-0 over Spain Park.

Rachel Rigney picked up the win after pitching a one-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts and two walks in a complete game.

Savage led Thompson with two hits. Wilson had a home run and drove in two runs.

Amanda Ballew had the only hit in the game for the Jaguars, who fell to 26-23 overall.

Oak Mountain fell 3-1 to Hoover in its opening game in the Area 10 tournament.

Julie Moss led the Eagles (29-20) at the plate as she finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Leah Reeve went 1-for-3 with a double. Caroline Seitz also finished 1-for-3.

Oak Mountain will face Spain Park in an elimination game April 30 at 2 p.m. Thompson will face the winner between the Eagles and Jaguars at 6 p.m.

Pelham will face Hoover at 4 p.m. in the double-elimination tournament.
