Briarwood Christian School offensive coordinator Geoff Walters and Pelham High School defensive backs coach Josh Averett recently accepted head football coaching positions outside Shelby County.

Walters, who has spent the past five seasons as the Lions’ offensive coordinator, is taking over as the athletic director and head football coach at Evangelical Christian School in Memphis, Tenn.

Walters, who came to Briarwood after serving as the head coach at Shelby County High School, coached his sons Bo and Zeke Walters at Briarwood as he served under head coach Fred Yancey. Bo is a sophomore linebacker at Mississippi State University and Zeke will be a freshman tight end at Southern Miss in the fall.

Averett was recently named the head football coach at Gaston High School, an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 1A school, in the Gadsden area. Averett spent three seasons as the head baseball coach and an assistant football at St. Clair County High School before joining the Panthers’ coaching staff.
