Four Shelby County athletes were honored with Player of the Year awards at the 2010 Kiwanis Club of Birmingham’s athletic awards banquet May 18 at the Harbert Center in Birmingham.

Three of the athletes honored were from Pelham High School.

Senior twin brothers Andrew and Michael Bishop tied for top honors as the 2009-2010 baseball Player of the Year. The Bishops helped lead Pelham, which was ranked nationally by several polls, to a 39-6 record and an appearance in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A quarterfinals. The Bishops will play collegiate baseball at Jacksonville State University next spring.

Pelham senior Ally Slaughter tied with Mountain Brook senior Carlisle Abele as the 2009-2010 volleyball Player of the Year. Slaughter, who signed a volleyball scholarship with UAB, helped lead the Panthers to an area championship, along with a 42-5 record, and an appearance in the sub-state round of the AHSAA playoffs during her senior season.

Spain Park High School senior Lauren Arnold was named the 2009-2010 girls’ soccer Player of the Year. Arnold, who will play at Clemson University next season, helped lead the Jaguars to a 23-4-2 record and a second-consecutive AHSAA Class 6A championship as a senior.

The Kiwanis Club of Birmingham annually honors the top players in each sport from the metro Birmingham area, including Jefferson County and North Shelby County.
