Local anglers looking to hook large cash prizes while helping out the county’s only Boys and Girls Club will get a chance May 29 during the fourth-annual Airport Marine Charity Bass Tournament.

The tournament will begin at 5:30 a.m. May 29 on Lay Lake, and participants will be allowed to fish from 5:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

Registration for the tournament is $200 per boat, which will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Montevallo. The registration cost is tax-deductible.

The tournament will help celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Montevallo Boys and Girls Club, said Director Freda Shivers.

“We just want to help them,” tournament director Flynn Gerald said of the Boys and Girls Club. “The more boats we have, the more we can help them.”

Participants can register at Airport Marine on Shelby County 87 near the Shelby County Airport from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. May 24-28. Tournament officials will also hold registration the morning of the event beginning at 3:30 a.m.

Although participants can launch from any port on the lake and fish anywhere on Lay Lake, tournament officials will only count fish caught between 5:30 a.m.-3 p.m. At 3 p.m., all participants will have an hour to return to Paradise Point for the fish weighing and payoff.

The tournament has a guaranteed payoff of $45,000, no matter how many boats participate, said Gerald.

“The truth is, this is the best payback and one of the easiest tournaments to fish in Alabama,” Gerald said. “We are giving away $5,000 to the first place, and we will have 50 drawings for $500 each.”

Tournament officials will provide cash prizes to the top 75 places.

“All of that money is guaranteed. It doesn’t matter how many boats we have signed up,” Gerald said.
