The Pelham Beautification Board presented Pelham Police Code Enforcement Officer Duke Wiser with the organization’s Officer of the Year Award during the City Council meeting May 24.

Police Chief Tommy Thomas was on hand for the presentation, and he said Wiser is an extremely valuable and hard-working member of the force.

“He’s a man of many hats,” Thomas said of Wiser. “And I’m sure the people of Pelham notice how he helps make our city a cleaner and nicer place to live.”

In other council actions:

– Thomas updated Mayor Don Murphy and members of the council on the recent trip to Washington D.C. in honor of Peace Officer’s Memorial Day.

A contingent of Pelham officers accompanied Thomas and Paula Davis, widow of slain officer Philip Davis, to the ceremony.

Thomas said more than 20,000 officers from across the nation were at the event, which included a memorial service on the Capitol lawn, in which President Barack Obama made a speech.

“It was quite an impressive event, and we enjoyed being there, representing Pelham and officer Philip Davis,” Thomas said. “We’re not going to forget Philip, not as long as I’m chief.”

— The council authorized Alabama Power Co. to install two streetlights in the Bear Holler subdivision and bill the city for electrical service.

— Approved a special use permit for T-Mobile at 90 Yeager Farm Road for modification of an existing facility.

— Held a first reading of an ordinance to amend Chapter 4 of the city code dealing with buildings, construction, and related activities, and Chapter 7 dealing with fire protection and prevention.

— Announced representatives from Mercer would present the findings of their city salary study during the June 7 council work session. The work session, which is not a public hearing, will begin at 5:30 p.m. The regularly scheduled city council meeting will begin at 8:45 p.m.
