About 26 percent of Shelby County’s registered voters cast ballots during the June 1 state primary election, according to County Probate Judge Jim Fuhrmeister.

According to the county’s unofficial voting report, 30,679 Shelby County residents voted in the election, which was about 26 percent of the nearly 119,000 registered Shelby County voters.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 200,000 people currently live in Shelby County.

“I think statewide, the turnout was about 33 percent or so,” Fuhrmeister said. “Obviously, Shelby County was a lot lower than that.

“The last election we had was the Obama presidential election,” Fuhrmeister added. “I don’t recall exactly what the exact voting percentage was, but I think it was about 60 percent. So this election was way off.”

Fuhrmeister said voter turnout may have been slightly affected by the Memorial Day holiday, but he said something else may have had a much larger impact.

“I think a lot of it was voter dissatisfaction,” Fuhrmeister said. “A lot of people just say ‘I’m not going to vote for any of these bums.’

“But really, if you are dissatisfied, the only way to fix it is to vote,” Fuhrmeister added.
