Chelsea officials are working to improve worn roads throughout the city, members of the City Council said during a June 22 meeting.

During the meeting, the council heard from Jeffrey Sollie, who lives on Cupid’s Lane, a dirt road off Shelby County 338 southwest of downtown Chelsea.

Sollie told council members the dirt road floods during heavy rains, and may become a safety hazard to those living on the road.

“When it rains, there’s a gully on that road that floods,” Sollie said. “If there was a fire or something involving a child on that road, I don’t think they could get a fire truck out there.

“Whenever there is a pothole, we have to fill it up ourselves because nothing is being done and it is tearing up our cars,” Sollie added.

Chelsea Mayor Earl Niven and Councilman Mike Denton said the road, which includes about five houses, is on the city’s list of future projects.

“The recommendation I have for the mayor is that we not bring the road up to subdivision standards, but we need to do the best we can,” Denton said. “It’s not as if nothing at all has been done about it.

“I have been there and looked at it, and it is bad,” Denton added.

Niven said he and other city officials were in the process of touring the city and identifying roads in need of repair.

“There are roads that need to be repaired in our city, and we have visited a couple of them recently,” Niven said, adding he recently visited Cupid’s Lane and Shady Branch Road. “We are getting some people lined up to see how big a role they will play in getting some asphalt out there.

“I assure you we will follow up on those,” Niven added.

In other business, the council:

Granted a retail beer and retail table wine license to the Chelsea Shell Station at 16851 U.S. 280. The gas station was recently purchased by Steve Sewani, who also owns a gas station at the corner of Shelby County 11 and Shelby County 36.

Approved Tamara Roethig to replace John Ritchie on the Chelsea Library Board. Roethig will serve on the board until May 31, 2014.
