Forget vampires, LifeSouth wants your blood

Vampire fever has officially hit the nation, but it isn’t just pale teenagers who are looking for blood.

LifeSouth is using the current vampire fad to save lives by hosting a blood drive at the AmStar theater in Alabaster on Friday, July 9 from 2-8:30 p.m., to coincide with showings of “Eclipse”, the newest installment in the phenomenally popular Twilight series.

“Vampires and blood go together so well it’s hard not to use it to our advantage,” said Blaire Middleton, LifeSouth Community Development Coordinator.

Donors who attend the drive will receive a T-shirt declaring their allegiance to “Team Edward” or “Team Jacob,” as well as coupons, snacks and other prizes.

“We’d love people to come before seeing the movie to get into the Twilight spirit,” Middleton said.

Summer is the slowest time of year for blood donation, with many donors traveling or on vacation, but the need for blood in hospitals is still as prevalent as other times of the year, Middleton said.

Potential donors must be 17 or older, or 16 with parental consent, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good health. A photo ID is also required.
