Vincent Town Council cancels regular meeting

Vincent citizens decked out in no-quarry attire began arriving at the Vincent Town Hall at 5 p.m. to attend a 6 p.m. special meeting at the town hall and a 7 p.m. regular council meeting at Vincent Middle/High School.

However, citizens were quickly on their way home after a brief special meeting in which the town council chose to cancel the 7 p.m. meeting.

Council member Ralph Kimble said he moved to cancel the 7 p.m. meeting because of an error in legal process. The 7 p.m. regular council meeting was moved to Vincent Middle/High School without any vote by the town council, which is an improper procedure, Kimble said.

“It would have been an injustice to all our constituents who did not have proper notification,” Kimble said.

He said he did not know if White Rock Quarries’ zoning request would be on the agenda for the next regularly-scheduled council meeting. The request would rezone 886 acres of land to accommodate a proposed limestone quarry.

No-quarry activist Judy Naugle said she, along with other Vincent residents, are disappointed in the town’s elected officials.

“The majority of the citizens still oppose a quarry. Our numbers have grown,” she said. “We thank our people for sticking together. We know this is not over yet.”

The next regularly-scheduled town council meeting is July 20 at 7 p.m.
