Shelby County is ranked No. 10 out of Alabama’s 67 counties for road quality so far this year, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation.

County Engineer Randy Cole announced the ranking at the July 12 County Commission meeting. The road quality ranking only applied to county roads constructed with federal or state funds.

Out of 58 roads graded, 11 roads received scores between 96-100 out of 100. Forty county roads received grades between 86-95, and seven roads received scores between 76-85.

The 2010 overall grade for Shelby County is 91.40 out of 100, which Cole said he was pleased with.

However, Cole said he wasn’t so pleased with the county’s No. 10 ranking.

“We’ve been as high as third or fourth, but pavement condition knocked us down,” he said.

Shelby County’s five-year ranking is No. 7 out of the 67 counties.

After the meeting, Commissioner Rick Shepherd said the commission simply hasn’t had the funding to make paving improvements on those roads.

“It’s a down economy, and we haven’t had the funding,” Shepherd said.

Cole said he doesn’t have a next step in mind to get back to the top of the rankings — the county will just keep working with what it has until revenues start picking up again.

“We’re going to be OK,” he said. “We’re going to keep doing the best we can.”
