When God closes a door, he opens a window — and in this case — filled the Shelby County Exhibition Hall.

Novella Club is sponsoring Columbiana’s 15th-annual Antique, Arts and Craft Show on Saturday, Aug. 7, from 8 a.m to 4 p.m. The show has moved to the Exhibition Hall, located on Shelby County 70, and will have the largest group of vendors in its 15-year history.

“The show is so much fun,” said Novella and local artist Bonnie Atchison. “The Novellas are the most hardworking women I know. They diligently give back to our community.”

The fundraiser supports many worthy projects: scholarships for Miss Shelby County and a Shelby County High School senior girl; all local schools; Novella’s Cancer Survivor Dinner, a free event for survivors and their families attended by more than 100 last year; monogram quilts for each new resident of the rehabilitation and skilled nursing facility; food boxes for the Shelby Woods Senior Community; and more.

The Novella Club was founded in the 1950s by sister clubs Columbiana Culture Club and the Vignette Club, all members of the Alabama Federation of Women’s Clubs. The energetic Novellas recently received first-place awards at the AFWC Convention for their charity work in public affairs and conservation, as well as the coveted President’s Award of Excellence. They also received many ribbons in the AFWC art and photography contests.

“We have booked over 40 vendors, the most ever,” said Heidee Vansant, vendor chair. “We have vendors offering all kinds of jewelry — handmade from silverware, fresh-water pearls, beads, stones, crystals, glass, metal, sterling silver, 14kt gold, repurposed vintage and premier designs; gourd art; thread crochet bookmarks, angels, baby items, and home décor; ceramics; baby and children’s clothing; homemade fudge; bake and plants sales; autographed books; antiques and collectibles; leather work; fine art; custom gift baskets; candles; home-made cedar chests and other wood products; decorated wreathes; local honey; stationery; quilts; and much more.”

Co-chairs of the show are Peggy Wood and Jo Ann Holcombe. Committee chairs are Vansant and Atchison, vendors; Stacy Walkup, advertising; Renee’ Wilder, signs and banners; Holcombe, ads, booklets and emcee; Denise Houston, activities; Wood and Sallie Lawshe, food; Lisa Sallas, cakes and cookbooks; and Marcia Murrah, plants.
