Former Briarwood Christian School football standout Jonathan Sillers shined in Samford University’s first fall scrimmage in preparation for the 2010 season.

Sillers, a sophomore, was the second-leading rusher in the scrimmage with eight carries for 42 yards. Sillers scored the only rushing touchdown in the scrimmage.

Sillers’ play earned him praise from Samford head coach Pat Sullivan.

“Offensively, a couple of the young running backs really got my attention,” Sullivan said. “I thought Jonathan Sillers came in and did a nice job.”

Junior Alex Davis, also a former Briarwood Christian star, recorded a sack in the scrimmage.

Sullivan said he liked what he saw from his team in its first full scrimmage this fall.

“I was pleased with the scrimmage overall,” Sullivan said. “It was physical. It was not polished, but I thought their effort was good. I thought some of the young guys played well that I wanted to see. On the other hand, we wanted to get in another 30 plays and that was where we were going to get a lot of the freshmen in who hadn’t played yet.”

Samford opens the 2010 season Sept. 4, when the Bulldogs play at Florida State University. The game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start and will be televised live on ESPNU.
