James Robert Edwards, passed away at his home in Montevallo on Monday, Aug. 9, 2010.

Mr. Edwards is survived by his wife, Jean Crim Edwards; two daughters, Nancy Edwards McGaughy and her husband Larry, and Peggi Edwards Freeman and her husband David; preceded in death by his daughter Carole Edwards Perry and survived by his son-in-law, Skip Perry; granddaughters, Deana Perry Dow and her husband Patrick, Kathryn McGaughy Scarborough and her husband Troy, and Hollen Jenna Freeman; one grandson, Logan James Freeman; great-grandsons, Medeski Stephen Dow and Zinan Patrick Dow; great-granddaughters, Asia Carole Dow and Elizabeth Nancy Scarborough; one brother, David Edwards; and brother-in-law, Hollen E. Crim and his pre-deceased wife Ann Crim.

Mr. Edwards was a proud graduate of Auburn University, a veteran of World War II, U.S. Navy submarine warfare, and retired after a full career with the Alabama Power Company. In his retirement, he was a long-time, active member of Montevallo First United Methodist Church, delivered Meals on Wheels several times each week for many years, and volunteered in many capacities at The American Village in Montevallo. He participated in Honor Air’s November 2008 visit to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., received the Distinguished Service Award given by the National Future Farmers of America, was a 2008 inductee to the Alabama 4-H Hall of Fame, an honorary award recipient of the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame, and most recently was the 2010 recipient of Montevallo’s Citizen of the Year Award.

The funeral was held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 13, 2010 in the chapel of Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham. Burial followed in Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham.
