It didn’t take long for Brian Breeze to make an important decision about his coaching future once he was offered the head baseball coaching position at Oak Mountain High School.

The former Pelham assistant baseball coach jumped at the chance to lead the Eagles.

Breeze was approved as the Eagles’ new head coach Aug. 19 at the Shelby County Board of Education meeting. Breeze replaces Shelton Stalls, who stepped down following the 2010 season.

“I was (at Oak Mountain) for eight years,” Breeze said. “It was my first teaching and coaching position. I’ve always considered Oak Mountain home. It was a very easy choice.”

Breeze, who left his post as an assistant at Oak Mountain in 2005 to take the pitching coach position at Clay-Chalkville, spent the 2010 season on the Pelham staff under Jeff Mauldin.

Breeze said being an assistant on Mauldin’s staff prepared him to become a high school head coach.

“(Mauldin) treats his coaches and players very well,” Breeze said. “He’s the ultimate professional. He’s a first-class guy.”

Breeze said he’s excited about the prospect of coaching in Class 6A, Area 10. Breeze inherits a roster that includes three players committed to Division I schools in seniors Jake Hubbard and J.D. Crowe and junior David Dahl. Hubbard has committed to Alabama, while Crowe and Dahl have committed to play at Auburn.

“Having an opportunity to be a head coach in this area is something you get excited about,” Breeze said.

Breeze said he doesn’t anticipate any changes in the Eagles’ coaching staff. He credited assistant coaches John Chamblee, David Hogue and Kyle Dudley for their leadership of the Oak Mountain program during the summer.

“They’ve done a great job,” Breeze said. “You can see their passion for Oak Mountain is there. I can’t wait to get started.”

In addition to Oak Mountain, one other Shelby County school added a baseball coach over the summer.

Michael Nix was approved as the new head baseball coach at Montevallo High School at a BOE meeting in June. Nix replaces Chris Stano, who spent one season as the Bulldogs’ head baseball coach.
