High school volleyball roundup: Pelham sweeps rival Thompson

Pelham High School volleyball coach Haven O’Quinn learned a lot about her team in the third game against rival Thompson in a Class 6A, Area 10 match-up Aug. 26.

After watching her squad erase a 10-point deficit late in the game against the Warriors, O’Quinn learned her team isn’t going to fold when facing long odds.

The Panthers battled back after trailing 19-9 in the third game to pick up a 25-22, 25-19, 25-22 sweep of Thompson.

“With rally scoring, at that point you’re usually out of it,” O’Quinn said. “It was a gut check for us. It was something we can remember and build on the rest of the season. I’m glad it happened this early in the season.”

Dana Allen and Porsha Tolbert recorded back to back kills to give the Panthers a 24-22 lead late in the third game. Tolbert slammed home the final kill to seal the match for Pelham, which improved to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in Class 6A, Area 10 play.

Tolbert led the Panthers with 14 kills. Tolbert also recorded three service aces.

Julie Bui finished with 24 digs. Sydney Days recorded a team-high 22 assists.

Haley Davenport and Hailey Schatz had five kills each for Thompson, which fell to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in Class 6A, Area 10 action.

Oak Mountain sweeps Vestavia Hills

Samantha Skinner and Sarah Goodwin recorded 10 kills each to lead the Eagles to a 25-22, 25-12, 25-13 sweep of Vestavia Hills.

Ashton Slawinski added seven kills for Oak Mountain, which improved to 4-4 overall.

Goodwin finished with a team-high 12 digs. Chelsea Payne recorded four digs and a team-leading 29 assists.

Vincent sweeps ASD

Jessica Posey led the Yellow Jackets (1-4) with nine kills in a 26-24, 25-19, 25-13 sweep of the Alabama School for the Deaf.

Michele Brasher added eight kills and Randee Isbell finished with six kills. Amber Shaw led Vincent with 21 digs.

Posey finished with six service aces. Rachel Johnson added five aces and a team-high 20 assists.

Briarwood loses in four to Gardendale

Sara Kate Bracewell led the Lions (3-4) with seven kills and 10 digs in a 25-16, 12-25, 16-25, 19-25 loss to Gardendale.

Logan Nasworthy added five kills and Katie Briley finished with four kills.

Briley and Mallory Whitaker finished with seven digs each. Claire Carter had a team-high 13 assists.

Chelsea falls to Springville

Emily Handley led the Hornets with 10 kills in a 21-25, 26-24, 25-15, 23-25, 11-15 loss to Springville.

Handley added 14 digs.

Sarah Simpson led Chelsea (4-5) with a team-high 16 digs. Jesse Vohler finished with 12 assists and three service aces.

Kingwood falls to Morgan Academy

Casey Whitmer had seven kills and four blocks in the Lions’ 21-25, 22-25, 13-25 loss to Morgan Academy.

Karley Chamblee had 16 assists and three aces for Kingwood, which fell to 4-3 overall.
