High school volleyball roundup: Jaguars win match against Thompson

The Spain Park High School volleyball team survived a back-and-forth battle with Thompson to clinch a 25-16, 25-27, 27-25, 20-25, 15-13 win over the Warriors in high school volleyball action Aug. 31.

Senior outside hitter Katie Best led the Jaguars (10-3) with 14 kills, five blocks and 25 digs.

Sydney Fritz finished with 14 kills and 17 digs. McKenna McLain recorded a team-high 41 assists.

Kendall Carlis finished with five blocks and two service aces. Kylie Beaubien added six blocks and two aces.

Hailey Schatz led the Warriors with 14 kills.

Haley Davenport added 10 kills. Kasie Holcomb recorded a team-high 12 digs.

Briarwood escapes with win over John Carroll

Katie Briley led the Lions with 20 kills in a 25-17, 17-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13 win over John Carroll.

Logan Nasworthy and Claire Carter added 11 kills each for Briarwood, which improved to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in Class 5A, Area 7 play.

Carter added a team-high 15 digs. Briley added 13 digs and Mallory Whitaker finished with nine digs. Nasworthy and Lizzie Baumbach added six digs each.

Adeline Reiser led the Lions with 60 assists.

Panthers drop area match to Hoover

Dana Allen and Porsha Tolbert led the Panthers with 12 kills each in a 25-17, 20-25, 20-25, 17-25 loss to Hoover.

Tolbert added 11 digs, three service aces and two blocks.

Ashley Kate Kepler added 11 kills and five blocks for Pelham, which dropped to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in Class 6A, Area 10 play.

Julie Bui led the Panthers with 16 digs. Sydney Days finished with a team-high 29 assists. Days also recorded three aces.

Montevallo tops Calera

Amber Cardwell led the Bulldogs with 27 kills in a 26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 16-25, 18-16 win over rival Calera.

Cardwell also had 16 digs and two blocks in the Bulldogs’ second victory over the Eagles in four days.

Mallory Anderson added 12 kills. Anderson led Montevallo (4-3) with 26 digs, 12 assists and eight service aces.

Sarah Hyde finished with seven service aces off the bench. Kathryn Ray recorded a team-high 18 assists and 16 digs.

Chelsea falls to Mountain Brook

Samantha Colyer led the Hornets with six kills and three blocks in a 15-25, 22-25, 25-22, 19-25 loss to Mountain Brook.

Emily Handley led Chelsea (4-6) with 18 digs and four service aces. Jesse Vohler recorded a team-high 16 assists.

Kingwood sweeps Tuscaloosa Academy

Casey Whitmer led the Lions with five kills and three blocks in a 25-18, 25-13, 25-11 sweep of Tuscaloosa Academy.

Blair Holsombeck added two kills, three assists and six service aces for Kingwood, which improved to 6-3 overall.

Hope Christian tops The Rock

Kelsey Thompson led the Eagles with eight kills in a 25-18, 25-21, 24-26, 25-16 win over The Rock.

Hannah Rettig and Teenie Donlin added four kills each.

Somer Howe led Hope with 11 service aces. Donlin added six aces.

Melinda Mahan recorded a team-high nine assists.

Evangel sweeps Evangel Family

Elizabeth Ragland led the Lightning with six kills, six service aces and four blocks in a 25-21, 25-16, 26-24 win over Evangel Family.

Rainey Ketcham added five kills, four aces and four blocks.

Meghan Byrd recorded five kills, nine digs and four aces.
