Alabama Power customers should beware of a possible phone scam, according to company spokesperson Michael Sznajderman.

“We have had a number of instances in the past few days of people getting calls from scam artists saying they are employees of Alabama Power,” he said. “(They’re) telling people their accounts are past due and if they don’t provide a credit card right now, over the phone, their service will be cut.”

Sznajderman said Alabama Power employees will never ask for credit card information over the phone. If customers receive such a call, they can call the customer service line at 1-800-245-2244 to check the status of their accounts. The line is open 24 hours a day.

Sznajderman said he knows of a few instances where customers have actually provided information to the scammers.

If customers have provided credit card information, they should immediately notify their credit card company.
