High school volleyball roundup: Eagles win Mid-South tournament

The Oak Mountain High School volleyball team defeated Pelham for the second time in a span of three days to claim the Mid-South tournament championship Sept. 4 at Thompson High School.

Senior outside hitter Samantha Skinner recorded 10 kills and seven digs to lead Oak Mountain to a 25-19, 25-14 sweep of Pelham in the title match.

Sara Goodwin added five kills. Ashton Slawinski finished with six digs.

Chelsea Payne recorded a team-high 16 assists in the title match for the Eagles, who didn’t drop a single game in seven matches in the two-day tournament.

Oak Mountain defeated Chelsea 25-9, 25-7 in the quarterfinals and picked up a 25-14, 25-13 win over Clay-Chalkville in the semifinals.

Samantha Skinner and Emily Cosgrove led the Eagles with five kills each in a 25-2, 25-7 win over Tuscaloosa County on the first day of the tournament. Oak Mountain also posted a 25-20, 25-11 win over Gardendale on the opening day of the tournament.

Porsha Tolbert and Dana Allen led Pelham with four kills each in the championship match.

Julie Bui recorded four digs and Sydney Days finished with seven assists.

The Panthers topped Gardendale 14-25, 25-12, 15-9 in the quarterfinals and earned a 25-23, 25-19 win over Mountain Brook in the semifinals.

Tolbert led Pelham with six kills and three aces in a 25-20, 25-12 win over Clay-Chalkville on the first day of the tournament.

Tolbert added seven kills and Sydney Days recorded 13 assists, four aces and six digs in a 25-21, 16-25, 15-7 win over Spain Park on the opening day of the tournament.

Kingwood falls in Rug Rat final

The Kingwood Christian School volleyball team fell 25-17, 19-25, 15-11 to Southern Academy in the Rug Rat Classic championship match.

Karley Chamblee recorded a team-high 17 assists, four aces and four kills for the Lions.
