The Kingwood Christian School football team picked up its third win of the season following a 28-6 win Sept. 17 over Evangel Christian Academy in Montgomery.

Senior Tyrone Pope accounted for three touchdowns in the win.

Pope scored the first touchdown for Kingwood with his 10-yard run in the first quarter.

Pope added a second rushing touchdown with a 33-yard scoring run in the second quarter to give the Lions a 14-6 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

Pope reeled in a 55-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Kevin Woody for his third touchdown in the game in the third quarter to push the Kingwood lead to 22-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

Dalton Sparks capped the scoring for Kingwood with his 25-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Pope led the Lions (3-2) with 106 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.

Woody, who rushed for 60 yards on 18 carries, completed 3-of-9 passes for 88 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Payton Sumrall led the defensive effort with seven solo tackles. Sparks recovered two fumbles and recorded a sack in the win.

Despite the win, Kingwood coach Vince Elliott said he felt the Lions didn’t give their best effort.

“We won in spite of ourselves,” Elliott said. “We did not play well at all. We had key errors and fundamental breakdowns. I thought we were significantly better and we didn’t show it. But when you can face the adversity and still get a win, it shows some guts.”

Kingwood Christian returns home to face East Memorial in its homecoming game Sept. 24.
