Mark McGuigan has been named the new head women’s tennis coach at the University of Montevallo. McGuigan becomes the first full-time women’s tennis coach in the program’s history.

“We are excited with the appointment of Mark McGuigan as our new head tennis coach,” said Athletics Director Jim Herlihy. “Coach McGuigan has played and helped coach tennis at a high level and we are excited about his potential to develop our women’s tennis program into a top Peach Belt Conference and regional contender.”

McGuigan comes to Montevallo after serving as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s tennis programs at the University of West Florida for the past three seasons. He has guided the Argonauts to the NCAA Tournament all three years as an assistant. In 2008, the West Florida women’s program was a National quarterfinalist while the men were National semifinalists. In 2009, the men and women were regional finalists while the women won the Gulf South Conference. The men were regional semifinalist and the women were regional finalists in 2010.

“I look forward to working with this growing athletic department,” said McGuigan. “I’ve met a lot of great people during my short time here and I’m excited to continue the growth of the tennis program and to be a part of the Falcon family.”

McGuigan played four years at West Florida and was part of two National Championship teams. In 2004 and 2005, his team won the NCAA Division II National Championship. He also was part of two Gulf South Championship teams in 2005 and 2006. In 2006 and 2007, his team advanced to the National semifinals of Division II.

McGuigan is a 2008 graduate of the University of West Florida where he received a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education.
