Coosa Valley defeats region rival Jackson

The Coosa Valley Academy football team picked up a 16-12 win over Jackson Academy in a key AISA Class 1A, Region 2 contest Sept. 24.

Bryce Cooke and Ryan Batson scored a rushing touchdown each and Cody Garrett added a field goal and an extra point to lift the Rebels to the region victory.

Cooke scored Coosa Valley’s first touchdown with a 3-yard scoring run with 1:48 remaining in the second quarter. Garrett added the extra point.

Garrett added a 23-yard field goal with 4:55 left in the third quarter.

Batson capped the scoring for the Rebels with his 4-yard touchdown run with 11:53 remaining in the game.

Jackson Academy scored two touchdowns late in the game, but Coosa Valley coach Vince DiLorenzo gave credit to his players for holding on for the region win.

“Jackson is really the best team we’ve played so far,” DiLorenzo said. “They were just a big and physical team. We had to really scrap and fight. Our guys did what it took to get a win.”

John Bullen led the Rebels (4-1, 3-0 in AISA Class 1A, Region 2) with 100 rushing yards on 21 carries. Bullen also completed 7-of-13 passes for 80 yards with an interception.

Batson finished with two catches for 42 yards and 31 rushing yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

Preston Parker led the Rebels’ defensive effort with 10 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery.

Sam Bullard added eight tackles and an interception. Batson finished with seven tackles and a fumble recovery.

Coosa Valley plays host to Meadowview Christian in another region contest Oct. 1.
