Briarwood rolls past Talladega

Briarwood Christian School quarterback Ben Craft accounted for four touchdowns to lead the Lions to a 43-20 win over Talladega on the road Oct. 1.

Craft scored two rushing touchdowns and threw two touchdown passes as Briarwood (5-1, 4-0 in Class 5A, Region 5) jumped out to a 36-0 lead in the victory.

Craft found Tanner Cunningham open for a 20-yard touchdown reception with 8:24 left in the first quarter to put the Lions’ first points on the scoreboard.

Craft scored on a 54-yard touchdown run with 8:51 left in the second quarter. Craft connected with Daniel Robert for a 30-yard scoring strike with 1:33 remaining in the first half.

Craft scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 8:44 left in the third quarter.

Taylor Core added a 31-yard touchdown run with 6:50 remaining in the third quarter and Cunningham capped the scoring for Briarwood with his 6-yard touchdown run with 2:34 left in the third quarter.

Matthew Furuto was successful on two 2-point conversion attempts and Wilson Whorton nailed two extra points in the win.

Furuto led the Lions with 53 rushing yards on three attempts. Craft finished with 52 rushing yards and two touchdowns on five carries. Core racked up 51 rushing yards on five carries and Sam Whitaker finished with 39 yards on eight attempts.

Craft completed 10-of-21 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns.

Furuto caught two passes for 57 yards. Robert finished with 52 receiving yards on two catches. Cunningham added two catches for 39 yards and a touchdown.

Briarwood will travel to Pinson Valley in its next region game Oct. 8.
