GREYSTONE — Last year, the Greystone Outreach Legacy Foundation was able to donate $40,000 to various local and state organizations through its Fallen Heroes Event.

This year, organizers are looking to have the same financial impact, while also remembering one of their own.

Event organizer Missy McCabe said the 2010 Fallen Heroes Event will be held in memory of Mark Caperton, a Greystone resident who died in July in a drowning accident.

“He has been a very instrumental part of the foundation from the get-go, so that’s why this tournament is in memory of him,” McCabe said.

The event, to be held Oct. 22 at the Greystone Golf and Country Club, will be an all-day occasion, with a golf tournament, tennis tournament, memorial walk, gumbo cook-off and a dinner including live music and an auction.

The tennis tournament will be first, with court assignments at 8:15 a.m. and the tournament at 9 a.m. A $40 donation is required to participate.

The memorial walk will be at 9:45 a.m., and there is a $10 participation fee.

The golf tournament, which will be held at the Greystone Golf and Country Club Founders Course, will have a 1 p.m. shotgun start and will be in a three-person scramble format. The fee to golf is a $200 donation.

Participation in the gumbo cook-off will require a $35 donation. The cook-off will be held at 2 p.m. at the Founders Clubhouse. Cooking demonstrations and a wine tasting will begin at 3 p.m., and judging will be at 3:30 p.m.

Live music, dinner and an auction will begin at 5 p.m.

Most of the proceeds from the event will go to the Alabama National Guard. Last year, because the event brought in so much money, organizers elected to also donate funds to Children’s Hospital and Hannah Home.

McCabe said Alabaster-based band Standard Candle will perform. Lead singer Josh Lynam’s brother is serving in Afghanistan.

McCabe said music group Cowboy Mouth will be part of the event in some way. She said she didn’t know yet if they would play or participate in a tournament. McCabe also said several people involved with the Wounded Warrior Project would be in attendance.
