A Pelham wine gallery will celebrate its fourth anniversary Oct. 15 by helping out one of the largest dog rescue organizations in the country while giving away a plethora of prizes.

Pleasure is All Wine, which is near the Oak Mountain Lanes bowling alley in Pelham, will hold its fourth anniversary Wine and Food Extravaganza beginning at 5 p.m. at the store.

Admission to the event is $30 per person, and all money raised during the event will be donated to the Adopt a Golden dog rescue program, which is an Atlanta-based non-profit organization.

During the event, the store will offer wine tastings and culinary fare from several local restaurants.

The store will also enter everyone who attends into a raffle for several door prizes, including a grand prize trip and VIP stay at the Alexander Valley Vineyards in California.

Adopt a Golden helps rehabilitate, train and find homes for hundreds of golden retriever dogs every year.

“This is our second year we have held this fundraiser. Last year, we raised $7,000, and our goal this year is $11,000,” said Lorraine Donald, owner of Pleasure is All Wine. “My husband and I have always loved golden retrievers. We are just very passionate about these dogs.”

About 16 percent of all dogs received at the Atlanta Adopt a Golden clinic are from Alabama, and the organization helps rescue dogs from across the Southeast, Donald said.

“When (Adopt a Golden) gets a dog, it is looked after completely — medically, physically and emotionally,” Donald said. “They will actually work to pair people with a specific dog. They support you through the whole adoption process.”

Adopt a Golden is a no-kill shelter, and its dogs are only euthanized if they are extremely aggressive or are terminally ill.

Because of the down economy, the shelter has seen a recent influx in the number of dogs brought to the shelter, Donald said.

During the fundraiser, Pleasure is All Wine will also partner with the Taste of the NFL organization to sell Gallo wines to benefit the Birmingham-based Magic City Harvest, which provides food to those in need in the Birmingham area.
