Briarwood sweeps Chelsea to claim region championship

The Briarwood Christian School volleyball team swept rival Chelsea 25-23, 25-18, 25-14 to claim the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A, Region B tournament championship Oct. 16 at Central High School in Tuscaloosa.

The Lions (19-17) will now host Spanish Fort in a Class 5A sub-state match Oct. 21. Chelsea (17-25) will host Gulf Shores in a Class 5A sub-state match Oct. 21.

Samantha Colyer led the Hornets with seven kills in the championship match.

Emily Handley added six kills and seven digs. Courtney Campbell recorded seven digs.

Sarah Simpson contributed a team-high 11 digs in the title match.

Briarwood defeated Selma in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A, Region B tournament to seal a spot in the sub-state round.

The Lions defeated McAdory in the semifinals to clinch home-court advantage in the sub-state round.

Chelsea topped Greenville 25-8, 25-16, 25-7 in the quarterfinals to earn its bid to the sub-state round.

Handley led the Hornets with 13 kills in the match.

Colyer added 10 kills and five digs. Simpson finished with five kills, five digs and six service aces.

Jesse Vohler recorded a team-high 20 assists.

The Hornets defeated Central-Tuscaloosa 25-13, 25-17, 25-23 in the Class 5A, Region B tournament semifinals to seal home-court advantage in the sub-state round of the playoffs.

Colyer led Chelsea with nine kills in the match.

Handley added eight kills, 11 digs and three service aces. Campbell recorded eight digs.

Vohler chipped in seven digs and four service aces.
