Calera advances to sub-state round of volleyball playoffs

The Calera High School volleyball team sealed a spot in the sub-state round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 4A playoffs after advancing to the Class 4A, Region B tournament championship match Oct. 16 at Jemison High School.

The Eagles (15-14) will host its first-ever sub-state match Oct. 21 against Alabama Christian Academy of Montgomery. The first serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Calera defeated Oak Grove 26-24, 25-10, 25-18 in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A, Region B tournament to seal a spot in the sub-state round of the Class 4A playoffs.

A’Kia Harris led the Eagles with seven kills. Kellie Rasmussen chipped in a team-high 21 assists and four service aces.

Calera topped Beauregard 25-15, 25-22, 25-19 in the Class 4A, Region B tournament semifinals to clinch home-court advantage in the sub-state round of the playoffs.

La’Jacqueline Morgan led the Eagles with eight kills and eight digs in the semifinal match.

Tierra Robinson added five kills and three blocks. Rasmussen contributed 25 assists and five service aces.

The Eagles fell 16-25, 21-25, 25-27 to host Jemison in the championship match of the Class 4A, Region B tournament.

Harris led Calera with eight kills in the tournament final.

Morgan added four kills and 14 digs. Elizabeth Rhinehart recorded four service aces and a team-high 15 digs.

Rasmussen chipped in eight digs, three service aces and a team-high 20 assists.
